The Tree of the Eight Beatitudes
The goal of this walk is to visit one of the most mysterious trees in the Kempen. The Tree of the Eight Beatitudes gained attention in the 19th century due to its peculiar and gnarly branches. In the then deeply Catholic Flanders, a connection was quickly made with the Eight Beatitudes of Christ. Other legends also circulated about the tree. This Scots pine is probably about two hundred years old and has certainly seen better days. Its end has often been predicted, but although it no longer has all its branches, it continues to stand proudly for now. The Tree of the Eight Beatitudes is located in the middle of the forest, and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Can you find it?
After passing the tree, you leave the forest and walk through fields and meadows, where you’ll likely spot many horses. You may even be greeted by a rider, which is no coincidence, as you pass by a large equestrian center. This is the only building you'll encounter on this route, along with a golf club nestled in this quiet, scenic corner. Following the Haarlebeek stream, you walk back through the forest to De Lilse Bergen.
