Cycling through the Valley of the Kleine Nete
On this route, you'll immerse yourself in nature, with plenty of green landscapes to enjoy along the way. The path leads you to the former Priorij Corsendonk, where monks once sought tranquility in the serene surroundings. It’s easy to see why they chose this peaceful spot – there are no noisy neighbors here!
Heading southward, you approach the Kleine Nete river basin. The Watermill of Retie marks the halfway point of your journey. It’s a great place to relax and take in the view. In summer, you might see kayakers setting off on the river, and just a few houses down, you can even enjoy some locally made farm ice cream. If you're in the mood for a picnic, there’s a lovely spot with a table just 250 meters before the mill.
Next, the route takes you to Prinsenpark, a provincial green domain with forests, meadows, and small bodies of water. The path follows the forest edge, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. Near a bridge over the Kleine Nete in Kasterlee, you’ll witness kayakers landing on the riverbank. On a picturesque island between two river arms, you’ll find two cozy brasseries to stop at. After a few pedal strokes, you’ll reach the Keeses Molen, a windmill that still turns and grinds.
The Kempen Ridge follows, a long stretch of elevated land that runs from Kasterlee to Herentals. The route winds its way through the woods along the ridge, leading to De Hoge Rielen, another unique natural area. Formerly a military site, it now serves as a space for youth organizations and schools, offering ample room for outdoor adventures.
Before reaching Gierle, a bike bridge takes you over the Aa river to the charming village center. The last inn before you return to De Lilse Bergen can be found near the church, making it a perfect stop to wrap up your journey.
